Research School of Physics · ANU College of Science and Medicine
This core physics course deals with classical electromagnetism. This course includes considerations of: electrostatic fields in free space and in dielectrics; magnetic fields due to steady and varying currents; electromagnetic induction; magnetic materials and Maxwell's equations. The course includes a lab component as part of the combined second year lab program; designed to introduce lab techniques, data analysis and learn physics that is not covered in the course workshops. Honours Pathway Option This is an extension-type option. Students in this option will be required to complete a higher-level question in each assignment comprising 15% of the total assessment. The HPO students do not need to fill in any forms, but do need to inform the convenor that they are opting in. If the questions are not completed, then the student will be considered as opting out of the HPO.

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester including: - 1 x 2-hour workshop and 1 x 2-hour optional tutorial per week and 4 x 3-hour laboratory sessions over the semester. - Approximately 82 hours of self-directed study which will include preparation for workshops/labs and other assessment tasks. Other Information The exam is a hurdle to pass the course. Students must achieve a passing grade (>50%) in the final exam to pass the course.
