This course introduces students to a varied and exciting range of artistic practices from contemporary India, Indonesia, China and Japan over half a century from c. 1965-2015. Students will be offered an understanding of political, cultural and artistic contexts against which this work is located. The theoretical framework will address issues of postcoloniality, globalisation, and marginality. The course offers students an understanding of the history of contemporary art beyond mainstream narratives based in Euro-American frameworks. It will situate artistic innovation and transformation in art practice alongside geopolitical processes from the Cold War to the climate emergency. This course may be offered in semester-long format or as an intensive.
